Mrs. Leo Alfred (Imelda L. Scharff) Birch

Mrs. Leo A. (Imelda L.) Birch, Sr., 57, Thomas Place, died after a long illness with emphysema at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, 1993, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where a wake service will be at 4 p.m..

Mrs. Birch was formerly employed at Steamatic, Inc., Dubuque.

She was born on July 31, 1935, in Dubuque, daughter of Louis and Mary (Crowley) Scharff. She married Leo A. Birch on March 25, 1952, in Dubuque; he survives.

She was a member of the Health and Breath Club of Mercy Health Center St. Joseph's Unit.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John (Mary) Ogilsby, Mrs. Kenneth (Lorie) Wilson and Mrs. David (Lona) Cavazos, all of Dubuque; seven sons, William A. "Bill" (and Shirley), Steven P., Dan R. (and Janet), Kenny J. (and Debbie), Leo "Sam" Jr. (and Pam), Louie J. (and Valerie) and Kevin L. Birch, all of Dubuque; 29 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Nancy S.) Hoag and Barbara J. Ahlers, both of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Robert Birch, on Feb. 14, 1990.

An Imelda L. Birch Memorial Fund has been established.
