WILLIAM N. MEYERS, Jr.

Telegraph-Herald newspaper, Dubuque, Iowa
Wednesday, November 8, 1916

On the front page is a picture of the young man in full dress uniform but in casual pose, standing in front of some form of tent. The picture is two columns wide and about 5 inches tall. It is not a very clear picture, probably due to age of the paper when microfilmed. Above the picture is this headline:

DUBUQUE SOLDIER BOY DROWNED IN RIO GRANDE

On page two, column four of this newspaper is the following story:

DUBUQUE SOLDIER BOY IS DROWNED AT BROWNSVILLE
Bulletin
Brownsville, Texas, Nov. 7 -- A military funeral will be held at Catholic church here Wednesday morning for Sargeant William N. Meyers of Company A who was drowned while hunting along the Rio Grande below Brownsville. He was wading after ducks and stepped into deep water and disappeared. The body was found two hours later. It will be shipped home.

William Meyer, Julien avenue grocer, was advised by telegraph late Tuesday afternoon of the drowning of his son, William, Jr. at Brownsville, Tex., where the young man has been with the Governor's Greys as a sargeant. Nothing is known of the circumstances surrounding the drowning, but details are expected momentarily.

Deceased is survived by his father and mother, six sisters and 2 brothers, all residents of Dubuque. He was 23 years old and has been connected with the Governor's Greys about six years.

This death was reported in the Dubuque Time Journal of November 8, 1916 also but is so hard to read I did not copy it. The article basically said the same thing as above.

Submitter note: I am not related to this family and have no further information.
