Gretchen F. Gilliam

Gretchen F. Gilliam, 77, of Santa Clara, Utah, formerly of Dubuque, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007.

Private memorial services were held in Santa Clara. The Metcalf Mortuary, Utah, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born on March 30, 1929, in Dubuque, daughter of Edward C. and Bernice Manson Frudden. She married Charles R. Gilliam on Nov. 19, 1951, in Dubuque. They lived in Dubuque until 1990 when they moved to Santa Fe, N.M., and later to Santa Clara.

She was born and raised in Dubuque. She graduated from St. Mary's Hall, Faribault, Minn., and Wellesley (Mass.) College.

She loved music and was the musical director of First Congregational Church, Dubuque, for several years. She played the piano from an early age and later learned to play the organ. She composed music which was performed in her church.

She also loved tennis and played with great spirit while making many friends along the way. She played until last year and medaled at the Senior Olympics and Huntsman Games.

Most of all, she loved life and viewed her life as a way to help others, volunteering many hours along the way. She always had a warm smile, much laughter, and words of encouragement. She did it all with a one of a kind exuberance and spirit. She deeply touched many lives and will be missed by all who loved her.

Surviving are her husband, Charles, of Santa Clara; a daughter, Gretchen G. Hart and a son-in-law, Larry M. Hart, of Lakewood, Colo.
