Mary F. Walsh

Mary Florence Walsh, 86, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., formerly of Dubuque, died Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Hacienda Rehabilitation and Care Center.

To honor Mary's wishes, no funeral services were held. She was interred at Roselawn Cemetery, Roseville, Minn. The Hatfield Funeral Home, Sierra Vista, was in charge of arrangements.

Mary was born on April 22, 1919, in Dubuque, daughter of Samuel and Wilhemina "Minnie" (Van Duelman) Walsh.

After graduating from nurses training, Mary was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army. She served with the 56th General Hospital, which followed the 1st Army from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. Mary and the unit were awarded several medals for meritorious service, for professionalism and for bravery under fire. She retired from the Veterans Hospital at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, after 30 years of service.

Mary moved to Sierra Vista in 1996. She was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.

Surviving are her first cousin, Mary Lou (Jaeger) Wagner, of Dubuque; and her sister-in-law, Jane (Cole) Walsh, of Shakespeare, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John; and her sister, Ruth Pfiffner.
