Obit., 10/31/1893 T.H.

The city Monday lost one of those men, who while not holding office or otherwise serving in public station, yet perform the highest duty of all in serving as a good citizen. Such a man was Joseph Stoltz. For thirty-eight years has he been an honored citizen of Dubuque, a man of upright life, successful in personal affairs and influential among his fellowmen. He was born in Baden, Germany in March 1824, and came to Buffalo, N.Y., in the early forties. There he lived for some years, and married his wife in 1846, who has trodden life's journey with him almost a half century. He came with his young family to the then boom city of Dubuque in 1855, where ever since he has pursued his business of carpenter and contractor. Mr. Stoltz built many dwellings and other structures in the upper part of the city and was possessed of considerable property. His wife survives him and also the following children, his sons being well know and leading men in the city: Ex-Alderman Frank J. Stoltz, Mrs. M.J. Smith, of Minneapolis; Mrs. John Hartman, of Glencoe, Minn.; Mrs. Matilda Stolz, of Dubuque; Mrs Emma Hannberg, of Provo City, Utah; Mrs. Carrie Cameron, of Dubuque, and Adam, Edward, Anton, and Jos. Stoltz, Jr., of Dubuque. They were proud of their father, and he was honored in having such a family. He was always strong and healthy, pursuing his business affairs up to his sickness, which began three weeks ago. Diabetes was the dread disease. he suffered considerable, but toward the end it ceased and falling asleep he passed away as calmy as a child. A good man has gone!
