John W. Johnson – Services for John William Johnson, 84, of Bernard, will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Catholic church at Sylvia Switch. The Rev. Elmer F. Becker, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Johnston died Monday afternoon at the Jackson county public hospital in Maquoketa, Ia., after a brief illness. He was born July 11, 1866 at Emeline, the son of Martin and Levina Johnson. He married Sarah Edwards Sept. 13, 1895. She preceded him. He farmed in the Bernard-Zwingle area. Surviving are six sons, George, of Dubuque, John and William of Bernard, Carlyle and Paul of Maquoketa, and Peter, of Durango; four daughters, Mrs. Blanche Donovan, Mrs. Gertrude Beauchamp and Mrs. Alice McCarthy, all of Dubuque, and Mrs. Mary Donovan, of Bernard; 30 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded by his wife, two sons, three brothers and a sister.
