Bernard J. (Barney) Smith, 75, of 1263 Curtis Street, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday after a brief illness. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ashworth and Bennett funeral home. Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home to St. Columbkille’s church. Burial will be in St. Philomena’s cemetery at Asbury. He was born Jan. 9, 1875, in Dubuque county, a son of the late James S. and Anna E. Savage Smith. He was a lifelong resident. He was a carpenter for 50 years and a member of St. Columbkille’s parish. He also was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul society, Local 678 of the Carpenters and Joiners Union, and the Eagles Lodge, Aeerie No. 568. Surviving are a brother, Al A. of Dubuque, and a nephew, John J. Armitage, also of Dubuque. He was preceded by his wife, three sisters and a brother
