WILLIAM A. SAHM

RICKARDSVILLE, Iowa -- Mr. William A. "Bill" Sahm, 61, of 19693 Route 52 North, Rickardsville, died of an apparent heart attack at 4:38 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a St. Joseph's Catholic Church Parish Christian wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Sahm farmed his entire life in the Rickardsville area.

He was born on Nov. 9, 1937, in Rickardsville, son of Gilbert and Marcella (Schmitt) Sahm. He married Doris M. Lake on Aug. 29, 1959, at Holy Cross Catholic Church; she died July 7, 1996.

He grew up in Rickardsville and graduated from the former Holy Cross High School in 1956. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, in Rickardsville.

He was a former mayor for the City of Rickardsville and gave hours of dedicated service on the board of the Rickardsville Athletic Club. He was particularly well-known for his enthusiastic playing and coaching of numerous athletic teams over the years in the Rickardsville area.

He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan, Iowa Hawkeye fan and Chicago White Sox fan who loved to debate and defend the fondness he had for his teams. Most recently he enjoyed his employment at the Bittersweet on the Bluff in East Dubuque, Ill.

Surviving are two sons, Mike G. and Terry K. Sahm, both of Rickardsville; three daughters, Diane (Bill) Brown, of Peosta, Karen (Carl) Domeyer, of Manchester, and Debbie (Brian) Vorwald, of Rickardsville; 13 grandchildren, Scott, Matt, Kayla, Billy and Brandon Domeyer, Robbie, Austin, Samantha, Maria and Mark Brown, and April, Emily and Jonathan Vorwald; his mother, Mrs. Marcella Sahm, of Dubuque; a sister, Dorothy (Lavern) Langel, of Luxemburg; and his special friend, Shirley Hough, of East Dubuque.

He was also preceded in death by his father.

A William A. "Bill" Sahm Memorial Fund has been established by his family.
