Dr. Charles A. Kearney’s parents were Adrian J. Kearney, a native of Virginia who died in 1907; and Elizabeth A. (Loug) Kearney. Most of Dr. Kearney’s family resided in Cascade where his parents were pioneers, settling in 1855. He was one of six children, C. A. was born on September 17, 1868. He married Caroline Freeman who’d been born in Farley on March 24, 1879.

Kearney first had his office and residence in the first house west of the bank-that location would now be the south side of 2nd Avenue N.W. behind Town and Country Insurance and Greenwood’s Grocery. Not long after his marriage, Dr. Kearney built the house at 105 2nd Ave. SW.

It is said that every Sunday he would take his horse and buggy to Cascade to visit his aged mother. Dr. and Mrs. Kearney lived a number of years in Farley, while he practiced as a physician here. Later they moved to Dubuque where Dr. Kearney died in 1936, at the age of 69. He is buried at Linwood Cemetery. In 1948, Caroline moved in with her daughter at Hawkeye, Iowa. She died in March of 1952. Dr. and Mrs. Kearney had three children: Col. Charles Freeman Kearney-US Army; Dr. William Kearney; and Helen-wife of Dr. W. A. Walsh.
