Joseph & Caroline (Singer) Kofmehl & Family

Joseph Kofmehl was born in Dittngen, Solothurn, Switzerland on Jan. 15, 1832. Joseph Kofmehl was the son of Ulrich and Anna Marie Jaggi Kofmehl. In 1855 joseph came to the United States migrating to Jo Daviess County,, Illinois, where he met and married Caroline Singer about 1858. Caroline was born in Jo Daviess Co., the daughter of Henry and Margaret Singer, natives of Germany. Joseph and Caroline had four sons; Joseph Jr., born 1859-1939; William Henry, born 1864; Joseph Julius, born 1866; and Christian Herman, born 1868.
Between the births of Joseph Jr. and William, Mr. Kofmehl served two years in Co. I of the 8th Illinois Calvary during the Civil War. Mrs. Caroline Kofmehl died in Galena, Ill., on Oct 14, 1880.

Joseph Kofmehl married Ellen Walsh on May 18, 1871. Ellen was Irish by birth, being born in Feb. of 1850 probably in Co. Waterford. Joseph and Ellen had four children: Francis C., born 1875; Edith Ellen, born 1877; Theodore A., born 1879; and Sylvia, adopted, born 1892.

In the 1880’s the Kofmehl’s moved from Delhi, in Delaware Co., to Farley. Joseph Sr. died April 22, 1901 and is buried at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Ellen Kofmehl passed away Oct. 1, 1910. Ellen’s father Patrick Walsh had moved in with the Kofmehl’s after the death of his wife in 1896. He died in Farley on Feb. 1904.
