Nicholas Kertels was born in Schoendorz, Germany on Dec. 14, 1877. He came to America with his parents, Matt and Catherine when he was seven years old. The family settled in the Bankston area where they farmed.
Nicholas married Susan Rauen and they had four children: Philomena, Mrs. Dr. Gerhardt, Lucille (Pfohl), Andrew and Wilfred. Nicolas was a well driller in Farley from 1930-1947. He was also the custodian for St. Joseph’s Church for twenty-one years. He died on Feb. 14, 1949.
Both Andrew and Wilfred joined their father in the well drilling business before they served in W. W. II. They continued the business for many years as Kertels bros.
