James & Helena (Crimmins) Elliott

James Elliott was born on Sept 20, 1874. He married Helena on May 1923. She was born Sept. 9, 1888. Five children were born to this union: James, Raymond, Kenneth, William and Marguerite.

Elliott opened the first gas station in Farley sometime around 1918-1920. It was located at the corner of 5th Avenue, and 1st on Old Hawkeye. He operated an Arco station until 1927 when the Old Hawkeye was named No. 20, and moved south of the tracks.

Elliott built a Standard station at 107 1st Ave. N. E. In 1948 he sold the station to his son James (Slick) and wife Dorie. They operated it until 1980 when their daughter Jane, and son-in-law, Duane Hermsen purchased it. They sold it to Dick Maahs in 1988 and are known as Maahs service.

James died May 7, 1946, Helena died Jan. 15, 1950
