Nicholas Simon was born in Thiemont Co. Arlon, Belgium. He grew up and was educated there. When he was 30 years old, he emigrated to America, landing here on May 18, 1876. He settled in the Bankston area where he worked as a blacksmith for nine years. On January 5, 1880 he married Mary Ann Reiter who was from Medinne, Luxemburg. She emigrated in 1870 with her parents. After their marriage, they farmed for 25 years and retired in Farley.

Nick and Mary had thirteen children. Many of them lived around Farley. Their children included: Nicholas, Joseph, John B., Michael, Peter, Matt, Anna, Leo, Kathryn, Louis, William and Elizabeth. Daughter Dena died in 1969.
