John D. Alsop came to Dyersville from England in 1854. He was born at Wensley Hall Derbyshire, England May 4, 1832. He began reading law in 1863 and was admitted to the State Bar in 1866, after serving a short time in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1853, he married Henrietta Potter in England. She died leaving three children, Charles, who later became Editor of the Dyersville Commercial; Elizabeth Mrs. McVetti and Blanche, Mrs. John Alexander. In 1873, he married Mata Hatch of Adrian, Minnesota. In 1892, Mr. Alsop went to Montana where he practiced law at Butte for four years, but the climate did not agree with him so he and his wife returned to Dyersville in 1896 where he resumed his old practice. He served a term as Mayor for the city in 1886 and again in 1888 to 1890. Mr. Alsop was the first organist at the Congregational Church of this city and was a promotor in establishing the Episcopal Church. He died in 1904. After becoming widowed, his two daughters made their home at the family residence, 316 3rd Avenue S. E. Mrs. McVetti died here and is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Alexander then left to make her home with her daughter in Montana.

JOHN D. ALSOP, attorney at law, Dyersville; born May 4, 1822, in Derbyshire, England; in 1854, came to Dubuque Co., he commenced reading law in 1863, and was admitted to the bar in 1866; has been in constant practice since. Married Hentietta Potter in 1853; she was born in 1822, in Derbyshire, England; died in 1867; they have three children- Lizzie, Charles E. and Blanche; second marriage , to Miss M. Hatch, of Adrian, Mich.; she was born in Michigan.
