Mr. James Hill 1835-1916

Mr. James Hill farmed in Taylor Township on Section 29 S. of Farley. Born in Ireland in 1835, he came to America by 1837. James Hill was known to be frank and outspoken gentlemen. He had a large circle of friends, and supposedly “generous to a fault.” Mr. Hill married twice, first to Miss Bridget O’Connor, a native of Ireland in 1876. Bridget died in 1877. Secondly, he married Annie Doug, also born on Irish soil. James Hill had six children, Rosann, (Mrs. Wm. O’Meara) of Farley; Jennie, (Mrs. Bernard Slavin) of Farley; Mary, (Mrs. George Huber) of Cascade and later of Farley; Isabelle, (Mrs. James Horsfield) of Placid; Frank of Elisabeth, Ill. and Louis of Farley.

Mr. Hill was laid to rest in Jan. of 1916 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Anna Hill died at age 46, in December of 1898. Her burial was also at the Catholic Cemetery.

"The History of Dubuque County, Iowa" - JAMES HILL, farmer, Sec. 29; P.O. Farley; born in Ireland in 1835; came to Dubuque Co. in 1837; has been engaged in farming, as a vocation, for all the years since old enough to transact business; has a good farm of 80 acres in a fine community; is connected with the Catholic Church, and identified with the Democratic party. He has been married twice; his first wife was Bridget O'Connor, a native of Ireland; they were married in 1876; she died, 1877; his second wife was Annie Dowd, also born in Ireland; married, 1877; two children -Rosana and Jennie.
