Alonzo Kimball Heald was born in Birmingham, Ohio on July 24, 1835. He had six brothers and one sister. A. K. learned to farm when young but in 1856 decided to seek his fortune and settled in a village called York near Edgewood, Iowa. There A. K. became knowledgeable in clerking a store. He married in 1860 to Juliette Heald, a native of Ohio. Alonzo and family arrived in Farley in 1866. He associated in partnership with R. L. Vibber in a general merchandise store; with the selling of grain and livestock. A. K. Heald was considered conservation and a shrewd businessman. The success of the enterprise was contributed to his far reaching insight. His word was true and Heald was well liked. The first place that held the Heald and Vibber store was a small one story building 20 x 30 feet which stood about 50 feet west of P. J. Kelly’s haystack; facing the railroad. In 1868, N. J. Loomis built the first brick block allowing Vibber and Heald to occupancy the store during the remaining construction of the large building. They were located where Town and Country Insurance presently hold an office-on the north corner of the west side of 1st Street.
Alonzo Heald died Dec. 12, 1909. Burial was from the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Juliette Heald, born Feb. 10, 1837, passed away on Oct. 27, 1917. The Heald’s have eight children. Four passed away before their parents: Burton D. Glenn, Winnifred and Mrs. Genevieve Lasher.
