Dubuque Telegraph-Herald, Jan. 5, 1902

J. S. Smead, better known as Squire Smead, of Epworth, Iowa, one of the early and best known settlors of Dubuque County recently lost a relative by death that attained the ripe old age of 104. The Smead’s come from a long lived race of good stock. Mr. Smead’s father lived to be 84 years. His grandfather to 94 years. His mother’s grandmother lived to be 101 years. Mr. Smead’s mother lived to be 78 and the present squire bids fair to establish a new record as he is hale and hearty as he was 40 years ago.
