Dubuque Herald – Jan. 4, 1874

FIRE – The greenhouses of Hackett & Bros., on Julien Avenue, were gutted by fire Monday morning. Mr. W. A. Harkett left the greenhouses about 8 o’clock Sunday evening, and his brother Arthur came away an hour an a half afterwards, having banked and covering the fire in the furnace and left everything to all appearances in order and safety. About 1 o’clock Monday morning, Mr. W. A. Hackett was awakened by an alarm raised by someone on the street, and on leaving his bed and going outdoors to the green houses nearby he found the shed which sheltered in a glow of fire, and although assistance came as speedily as possible, the fire did its work quickly and effectually and the destruction was complete. The houses were wrecked and the plants killed by the heat or the frost. The loss is estimated at $3,000, on which there is an insurance of $1,500 in the Black River Co. of New York, which goes to Messrs. Harkett’s creditors. The accidental escape of the flames from the furnace from a defective door is said to be the cause of the fire.
