A. T. GARNER

Mr. Albert Thompson Garner was a respected early settlor of Farley. A. T. was described as quiet and unassuming in nature, well liked and generous. He was born June 6, 1843 at Salem, Indiana. At age nine he came with his parents in a covered wagon drawn by oxen to settle at Epworth. At age 18 the Civil War broke out. He became a member of Co. H; 12th Iowa Infantry, serving throughout the war. A. T. took part in the battle at Shiloh and the capture of Ft. Donalson.

In 1868 he married Miss Marie E. Miller. Mrs. Garner died June 7, 1873 leaving a small child. She was 41 at the time of her death and was buried at Fairview. There were two daughters; Mary, who died prior to her mother’s death, on Oct. 10, 1872 at the age of five months. The second child, Maggie, was two when her mother passed away. Maggie married Mr. Clarence Milner in 1891. She died suddenly in July 1900, leaving two daughters, Bessie and Hazel.

A. T. Garner married a second time to Miss Martha Benton. Martha lived from 1850 to 1936. She too was buried at Fairview. A. T. and Martha had three daughters and one son; Mrs. Frank Clark; Mrs. Charles E. Arquitt; Mrs. Bert Powell of Hudson, Co.; Alfred, who died of influenza in Cedar Rapids in 1918.

A. T. held many civic and school offices while living in Farley, including that of Mayor. He was a cabinet maker, making fine furniture. He died Dec. 31, 1921 as a result of a heart attack and fall which occurred while walking his granddaughter to the depot.
