RUMORS – It is rumored that the Illinois Central Railroad Company refuses to build a bridge across the Mississippi River at this point unless it can secure control of the Dubuque and Sioux City Railroad. The fact is the Illinois Central road is a huge monopoly, and without a doubt would like to swallow all the interest of Iowa. Whether it will succeed waits to be seen. The bridge we will have, or we will dispense with the necessity for the bridge by opening an outlet to St. Louis. We believe that city furnishes a better market for Iowa than Chicago, and the refusal to build a bridge over the Mississippi here in the end may be a benefit to Iowa as well as damage to Chicago.
