TAKING SOUNDINGS FOR A BRIDGE – The St. Louis Republican on the 4th inst., says: “Mr. Homer, the city engineer, who has engaged a week or two in taking the soundings of the Mississippi mud and water at a point in the middle of the channel, nearly opposite Washington Avenue, has succeeded in reaching a solid rock formation at a distance of about seventy feet below the surface. The soundings were taken with a view in finding a good foundation for the great bridge to be constructed across the Mississippi at this point.”
