JOHNNY WAS CAUGHT – The veritable “Johnny Edwards” has been caught at last, after a futile efforts heretofore. “Johnny” is a colored man working on the War Eagle and likes to mix with “white trash,” to the disgust of Mary Lewis, also colored, whom he has “seduced” under promise of marriage, but never made her his wife. “Johnny” was caught sleeping with a white girl some time ago and ever since his old flame has been jealous, and procured a warrant for his arrest, but none of the officers caught him. Every time the War Eagle arrived Mary would trot to the Justice’s office to see if something could be done to bring her “Johnny” “to time.” Last Friday “Johnny” was nabbed by Officer Hardy and lodged in jail. Early yesterday morning he was brought before Justice Cantillon for trial, but Mary would not prosecute and fell upon his breast, smothering him with kisses. She said she could not bear to see “Johnny” injured, and told the Justice not to hurt him. After paying costs the couple walked out, arm in arm, as loving as two black crows.
