The Democratic Herald – Sept. 1, 1865

CATHOLIC ORPHANS ASYLUM – We referred, some weeks since to the contemplated establishment of a Catholic Orphans Asylum in this city, and promised to keep our readers advised of its progress of this enterprise from time to time. As we announced on a former occasion, the house and grounds known as the Hospital on Fourteenth Street, were donated to the Very Rev. Father Donoghue to the use of the Orphans Asylum, and this house and the buildings connected with it, having been undergoing repairs, and such alterations as seemed to be needed to adapt the premises to the contemplate use which they are to be devoted. This required money, of course, and a collection was set on foot some time ago to secure the necessary amount. So far the subscription funds have been principally confined to Bishop Smyth, a few clergyman ad a few members of the Society of St. Vincent of de Paul of this city, but now as the funds collected from these sources are nearly exhausted, and much still remains to be done in putting the building in proper order for the accommodation of orphans, procuring furniture, wood for winter, provisions &c, and a general effort will be made to procure the necessary means for these purposes. To give an idea to those who feel and interest in the success of this enterprise of which has been collected already, and to discourage others to emulate the charity of the donors, it has been thought advisable by the managers to publish the following list, which embraces all the payments already made, but not all the amount subscribed. Payments made hereafter on subscriptions already made, and now donations will be published every week.
