The Democratic Herald – Sept. 1, 1865

THE RACE – The trot at Peru Track, yesterday we did not attend, but from all reports have come to the conclusion that it was another “flumux” causing general dissatisfaction. Three horses entered the contest, for the first heat, “Sam Shinn” having the inside, “Comet” next, and “Peavine” on the outside. The horses got off at the word “go,” and in making the turn “Sam Shinn” fell behind, when the other two made for the track driving foul, running into “Sam Shinn’s sulky, capsizing it and throwing the driver head over the wheels. Peavine kept on around while the other two stayed behind to argue the case and repair damages. The judges decided it was no heat, owing to foul driving, at which Peavine’s driver objected, and refused to enter again unless allowed the best. “Comet” and “Sam Shinn”, then had another trial , in which “Comet” was distanced owing to poor driving, and “Sam Shinn” declared the winner of the race and purse. There is dissatisfaction on all sides, and as many different reports of the races as there were horses in it. We, in common with hundreds of others, begin to think that the glory of horse racing has departed.
