The Democratic Herald – Aug. 4, 1865

“CHAWDED UP” – A returned solider by the name of Stone, got left by the Canada yesterday, and falling in company of a party of raftsman, spent all his money buying “forty-rod” Whiskey for them to get their muscle up. Muscle reached its maximum about the same time that the soldier’s money gave out, and his inability to pay for further refreshments was the occasion of getting “carved,” to use the language of the fancy. When taken before Justice Welsh, he was in a terrible fix, bruised, gashed, bloody, and generally presenting a dangerous appearance. As the perpetrators of the outrage could not be found, no arrests were made.
