The Democratic Herald – Aug. 2, 1865

ANOTHER STABBING AFFRAY – Last evening about 9 o’clock, an altercation took place in the lower part of town, near Cooper’s Plow Factory, between three men, during which one of the party named John Gilmore was stabbed in the forehead over his right eye, producing a dangerous wound and fracturing the skull. It appears from what we can learn, that Gilmore was called in a house for a christening, where he met Pat Kennedy and John Connoford, and, after leaving, was attached in the street by Kennedy, without any protection. He in defense knocked Kennedy down, and was getting the better of him, when Connoford interfered in behalf of Kennedy and stabbed Gilmore as above stated, besides bruising his body in a severe manner with kicks and stones, he would have been killed but for the interference of people living near. He was taken to his home behind the gas house, where medical assistance was rendered. This Kennedy is a brother to the two brothers of that name now in jail, charged with murder. Connoford is a desperado from Rockford, where he was thrown in jail for crime. Gilmore has served three and one half years in the 43rd Iowa Regiment, and was lately discharged.
