Dubuque Democratic Herald – Dec. 3, 1864

A HORRIBLE CASE OF FREEZING – A man named Patrick Hughes was brought to the county house last Thursday with both of his arms and hands frozen in a severe manner. He was formerly from New York, and a laboring man, and has been in the county but a few months. He came from Lytton’s, several miles from town. He lost his way during the cold snap a couple of week ago, and laid out all night, freezing himself in such a manner that amputation will be necessary to save his life. His arms are swollen, and skin has bursted, and mortification has already set in. The county physician went out yesterday to attend him.
