MONEY LOST AND FOUND – Mr. A. Greenwald has recovered his lost money under circumstances which gives us pain to relate. Last Wednesday Mr. Greenwald, in company with Mr. A. Levi and M. A. Hubert, fur dealers, entered Mr. Luthers’ saloon, on Seventh Street, and when coming out of the place Mr. Greenwald dropped from his pocket a roll of money and a draft, amounting to $670. Mr. Hubert coming out a few feet behind the others, found the money on the sidewalk in front of the saloon, where it had fallen, and putting it in his pocket, joined the party on their way to Main Street, but did not make known the prize he had found. After a while Mr. Greenwald discovered his loss and questioned each of the parties it but elicited nothing to lead to the recovery of the money. Deputy Marshal Mulhall was put on the track and made vigorous efforts to trace the finder of the funds. He questioned Mr. Hubert about the matter, who denied any knowledge of the transaction. Mr. Knackstedt, a farmer from Sherrill’s Mound, was passing along Seventh Street with a team and saw Mr. Hubert pick up the money, but not knowing the loser, went along and though no more of the matter until he reached a store opposite the State Bank, where he sold some hides, and remarked to the dealer that he saw a man pick up a good roll of money a few hours before on Seventh Street. Here another difficulty arose. The merchant notified Mr. Greenwald that evening that a man, to him a stranger, had seen the money picked up. Who was the stranger who saw the money picked up? Fortunately, when selling the hides, the stranger contracted for some fruit trees of a New York Nursery agent, Mr. Eggleston, who had the farmer’s name. Then there was another stir to find out where the money agent was stopping. After running about to several public houses, Mr. Eggelston was found at the Tremont House and the farmers name and residence was obtained. The Marshal was sent out to Sherrill’s Mound and brought Mr. Knackstedt into town yesterday, when he recognized Mr. Hubert as the man who picked up the money. Mr. Hubert was confronted and questioned about the matter, but he denied any knowledge of the affair, and it was only when the Marshal threatened to imprison him, he owned up and handed over the money. Mr. H. alleges as an excuse, that he was only playing a joke on Mr. Greenwald, and intended to return the money. Mr. G. gave Martin Mulhall $100 for his efforts, and was at other expenses, amounting in all to $190, which Mr. Hubert has refunded to Mr. Greenwald.
These are the facts that have been related to us, and we submit them without comment.
