Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 6, 1864

A TEAM UNDER THE ICE – Last evening at half past 5 o’clock George Martin, the well-known teamster of this city, was crossing the river with a large load of reaper for Thomas Faherty, and within ten feet of the Iowa shore at the foot of Jones Street on the levees the ice gave way precipitating horses, sleigh and reapers into the river. The horses were drowned and sleigh and contents entirely submerged. Mr. Martin jumped barely in time to save his own life. There was no one near at the time of the accident or all might possibly been saved. The horses were valued at $250. Mr. Marin is an industrious laborer without mean to repair his heavy loss. We hope we may receive the practical sympathies of the public by way of timely assistance. A short time previous to the above accident one of Merry’s teams broke through just below Jones Street but were rescued.
