Dubuque Democratic Herald – Mar. 1, 1864

SMALL POX – Some time ago a solider named Massicker, a new recruit from Allamakee County, was taken from the Soldiers’ Home where he was sick, to more comfortable quarters in another part of town. Before he left the “Home” the small pox had broken out there, but nothing was thought of it to last Sunday, when the symptoms became too evident to be mistaken, and efforts were made to remove him to the pest house at the foot of Seventeenth Street. Provost Marshall Adams was called upon for assistance to remove the man and gave an order for Mr. Dobler to take charge of him. Ongoing for Dobler, who lives on Trudell’s block on eighth Street, he was found to be sick with the same disease, having attended the solider who died a few days ago of small pox. The solider was removed without the aid sought to the pest house, where he is under medical treatment. (The last sentence was cut off in the article.)
