Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 6, 1864

A CASE OF CRUELTY – An unfortunate difficulty occurred in Jefferson Township last Saturday. It appeared that a teacher named Simpson thought proper to chastise one of the pupils, a boy named Gandolfo about ten years of age, for some alleged misconduct that occurred after the dismissal of school. While engaged in whipping him, it is said rather severely for the nature of the offense, the boy got away from him. The teacher ran after him and falling in the pursuit it is feared that he became more angry than before and on approaching the boy he pushed him down and fell upon him with such force as to inflict considerable bodily injury, disabling the boy for some days. The teacher was arrested, examined before Justice Grew and held in bail for the sum of $1000 for his appearance in the District Court.
