Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 6, 1864

ANOTHER FIRE – Yesterday morning about 10 o’clock, the house of J. Haus, a poor and industrious man, living on Julien Avenue, took fire from a defective chimney and came near to being burned to the ground. The fire was discovered on the roof under considerable headway, but by the prompt assistance of the neighbors throwing on snow and water it was extinguished before burning down the house. There is a good size hole in the roof and the ceiling is considerably damaged. It will take about $75 to repair it. There was no alarm given by the fire bells, although several firemen were present and helped subdue the flames.
