Dubuque County Fair Week Sept 1863

First Day-Tuesday

Entries may be made at the Secretary’s Office, inside the grounds until 8 o’clock a.m., at which time the books will be closed until 7 o’clock p.m. in the evening, when they will be opened two hours, at the office in town, for the accommodation of only those from a distance who could not reach the fair earlier.

Superindents of department s will be ready to receive and arrange articles and animals early in the morning, and continue so engaging during the day.

At 3 o’clock p.m. all Committees will rendezvous at the Judge’s stand, vacancies will be filled, and tickets distributed that will be good through the fair. At the same time the exhibition will be formerly opened by the president.

Second Day-Forenoon

At 9 o’clock, Committees on all minor classes will at the Secretary’s Office, take their books, and will once proceed to discharge their duties, before the crowd becomes too dense, and articles become soiled by dust and handling.
At 9 o’clock, No. 9, Oxen, Steers and Fat Cattle will be shown in the ring. The tractability of oxen may be tested.
At 10 o’clock, the female portion of Nos, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will be shown in the ring, and each family or breed a district group. Cows of three years old and upwards will be admitted first; after they are dismissed, heifers two years old, and so on according to age.

Milch cows will be examined in the stalls.

Afternoon

At 1 o’clock, No. 13, Horses of all work, will be shown throughout the list.
At 2 ½ o’clock, No. 15, will be tested to a load.
At 3 ½ o’clock, No. 17, Grand trial of a fast team, double and single - speed and endurance will be tested.
At 5 o’clock, Committees on all minor classes will hand in reports to the secretary, and assist the clerks in making correct copies of the same.

Third Day - Forenoon

At 8 ½ o’clock, plowing match.
At 9 o’clock, Nos. 19 and 20, Mules and Asses.
At 10 o’clock, the male portions of Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, each breach forming of a distinct group. Bulls three years and upward will be admitted first; after they are dismissed, bulls two years old, and so on according to age.
This class will be immediately followed by the exhibition of Herds No. 8.

Afternoon

AT 1 o’clock, No. 11, thoroughbred horses
At 1 ½ o’clock, No. 12, Roadsters, this has always been the most exciting contest of the fair.
At 3 ½ o’clock, No. 13, Sweepstakes for the best horse, best mare of any age or breed.

Fourth Day – Forenoon

At 9 o’clock, No. 10, Grand sweepstakes for best bull and best cow of any age or breed.
At 10 o’clock, No. 16, Family Carriage Teams.
At 11 o’clock, No. 18, Trotting Stallions for a premium of one hundred dollars, to be followed immediately by a grand procession of all winning animals.

Afternoon

At 1 o’clock, No. 67, Boys and Girls Riding Match.
At 2 o’clock, the gates will be opened, an animals and exhibits may be removed.
