THE COUNTY SCHOOLS

Peru Township, Dubuque County, contains for independent school districts, viz, Sageville, Christian Leatscher, teacher. Number of pupils enrolled, 24. Riverside, V. Leatscher. Number enrolled, 30. Bloody Run, J. J. McAllister, teacher. Number enrolled, 28. Knoxville, F. Schutte, teacher. Number enrolled, 43. Total number enrolled, 125; average attendance 75 percent of this number.

Each district has a first class stone building for a school house, a good eligible site, a cistern on the premises, a set of outline maps and dictionary. Knoxville and Riverside have furnished their rooms with patent seats and teacher’s tables. The others are in fine condition except for the seats and these will be furnished at no distant day. The teachers are gentlemen of experience and ability. Term of school, six months. Phycology and hygiene are taught orally, as a general exercise. A few of the pupils read history, but a large majority of them are below this grade, being only from six to 14 years of age. Each school has a grammar class and their recitations are considered “good.”

Knoxville has the most completely furnished premises and the largest attendance, but Bloody Run has the most advanced class of -- (type is very faint or missing). The schools are in a prosperous condition, and the parents should make the best promise use of them by sending their children every day, and calling occasionally to see how they are getting along.

The acn--- (type is very faint or missing) of independent district of Storm Hill (again type is very faint) is being taught the present term by Miss Hallie Jones. Number enrolled, 34. All doing well. House stone, in good condition and well furnished; by this I mean to say that they have patent furniture, outline maps, globe, dictionary, call bell, chairs, clock, numeral frame, broom, chalk and blackboard. Also a woodhouse well fitted with dry fuel. (Word missing) and system prevail, and good work is being done.
