SURPRISE
Conductor C. W. Farley Caned

Conductor C. W. Farley, who had been connected with the Dubuque Southwestern road for the past fifteen years, was completely taken by surprise upon his arrival at Farley, on Saturday evening last, and treated to a handsome caning by his mold associates and train men. A week or ten days since Mr. Farley tendered his resignation to the officers of the company, to take effect January 1, 1877, and the boys at once unanimously contributed to the purchase of a handsome silver mounted cane to be presented to their “old” boss at the termination of his last trip over the road in which he had been so long and favorably known. Upon the arrival of the train at Farley the program was arranged to summon Mr. Farley to the train master’s office on important business, where he was soon surrounded by his old associates and fell a willing victim to their convincingly devised conspiracy. The surprise was complete, and so overcame Mr. Farley that he could scarcely utter one syllable in response to the presentation remarks of Elder Rea, Jr., express manager.
