Takes Fire

A Frenchman named Cartone, who operated a lunch booth just north of the saloon of Hughes & Beason, near the city hall on Clay Street was badly burned there Wednesday while preparing a hamburger sandwich. The interior of the shanty caught fire and was badly scorched. Ferd. Kinsella was close at hand when the fire started and assisted the Frenchman to extinguish the blaze.

Cartone was preparing a sandwich, frying the meat over a gasoline stove, when without warning the stove blew up sending the burning gasoline to all parts of the little restaurant. Cartone first thought was to save the building from destruction and with that intent he grabbed the blazing gasoline stove and carried it out of the place. By this time the interior of the palce was afire, but he rushed back in, in an attempt to save some of his supplies and his cooking utensils. He got nothing out, however, as the pine interior was crackling and burning, the heat driving the Frenchman back to the fresh air. A few buckets of water extinguished the blaze.

With the fire out, Cartone began to give attention to his burns. It was found that he was so badly burned that it was necessary to call a physician, who, after an examination found that the man had been badly burned back of the ears, much of the back hair being burned off. His face was also, blistered, while both hands were frightfully burned as a result of carrying out the burning gasoline stove, at first it was thought that it would be necessary to send the man to the hospital, but after the burns were dressed, he was sent to his rooms, where he is resting as easy as could be expected.
