A SERIOUS ACCIDENT
OCCURS AT KEY WEST
~
Boy Has Foot Caught In a
Wagon Wheel and is Dangerously Hurt
~
The seven year old son of Mr. A. G. Pancratz of Rockdale met with a very serious accident Sunday. He went to church with his parents in Key West, and in getting out of the buggy after returning got his foot caught in a wheel. The horse started up at the same moment, causing his foot to slip between the spokes and the bone was broken just above the ankle. The horses were stopped, and the boy removed from his perilous position, but he presented an appalling sight. The bones were so twisted and crushed that they protruded through the skin, and the axle grease from the hub was mixed in with the blood and bones. He was placed in a buggy and brought to the city as rapidly as possible and taken to the home of Dr. Bigelow, who had him sent to Finley Hospital, where he amputated the foot above the ankle. The injury was such that no time could be lost in performing the operation, and the boy is now in a very weak condition, and it will be a few days before it can be stated definitely whether he will recover or not. The boy showed remarkable fortitude under the circumstances. The many friends of Mr. Pancretz who was formerly a resident of Dubuque will sincerely regret the accident.
