MURPHY, Michael F.
Banker; born Dubuque County, Iowa, March 28, 1858; son of Patrick and Ellen (Manning) Murphy; educated in Postville High School, Bayliss Business College; married, Rochester, Minn., May 22, 1882, Maggie Bowler; children: Mary, Louis, Margaret (and five deceased children). Worked as section hand on a railroad, when a boy; taught school in Iowa and Minnesota until 1879; went to North Dakota in same year, a poor boy, landing in Fargo; secured position in hardware store, later with Amess Iron Works; went to Grand Forks, 1886 and formed a partnership with Stephen Collins under firm name of Collins & Murphy, dealing in farm machinery; sold out to Collins in 1892, engaging in real estate loan business and banking, Jan. 1, 1893; at present doing largest real estate loan business west of Chicago, being general agent for loan department of Union Central Life Insurance Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. President and director State Bank of Reynolds; stockholder in Scandinavian American Bank of Grand Forks; director and vice-president of the Union National Bank of Grand Forks, director of Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of Jamestown; president International Falls State Bank; director Concrete State Bank, State Bank of Hoople, Northern National Bank of Bemidji, Minn.; vice-president Beech Manufacturing Co. of Grand Forks; also owner of several thousand acres of farm land, and several thousand acres of timber lands. State senator two terms; twelve years member, six years president school board; member Park Board eight years, member Board of Regents of State Univ. of North Dakota; now serving as mayor; Democrat; Catholic, Elk, member Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, Clubs: Commercial, Town and Country, Irish American. Residence: 120 Reeves Av. Office: 18-20 N. 2d St., Grand Forks.
