At Clarion, Iowa, Tuesday, March 17th of cancer of the stomach, George W. Baxter, aged sixty years.Deceased came to Spirit Lake from Michigan in 1877 and made this place his home until two years ago, when the family moved to Cedar Rapids. Less than a year ago the death reaper took from the family circle the wife and mother, after which the remaining members of the family moved to Clarion.
George Baxter held a warm place in the hearts of many in this county. Though his health was always poor, caused from army hardships, he bore his afflictions with a large degree of patience. His energy far exceeded his strength, always attempting to do more than his physical condition would allow. He was a Mason and a member of the local Grand Army post.
The chief mourners are two daughters, Mrs. Millie Reed and Miss Mamie Baxter, and a brother, Henry, who resides here. The loss of a loving father is keenly felt under any circumstances, but to these sorrowing daughters the blow is doubly hard as he was their sole councilor and protector.
The remains were brought to Spirit Lake for interment and the funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church by Rev. Palmer, of Cedar Rapids, Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.
