C.A. Arnold, one of the older residents of Dickinson county, passed away at his Spirit Lake home at 2 o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. Arnold has been in failing health for several years and on Sunday suffered a stroke of paralysis, which he could not combat for long. The funeral services will be held from the home at 1:30, Friday afternoon. In charge of the American Legion. Rev A.S. Wight will also officiate.Charley A. Arnold was born in Summerset, New York, September 10, 1836, and passed his eighty-fifth birthday on the 10th of this September. He resided there with his parents until he was about 10 years of age when he removed with them to Fort Washington, Wisconsin. Later he went to Davenport, where he was in the mercantile business at the time of enlistment in the Civil War, being a member of C.H., Eighth Regiment of Iowa Volunteers. Following the was he came to Arnold Park to visit a brother, going from here back to Wisconsin but returning to Dickinson county again in 1868, where he has since resided, with the exception of a short time at Spencer. He was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Kalteaux IN Wisconsin in 1855. Five children were born to this union, three daughters and two sons, four of whom survive to mourn the death of their father. The children are: V.A. Arnold, Mrs. Naomi Beebe and Mrs. F.H. Ferguson of Spirit Lake and O.E. Arnold of Lakefield. One daughter Mrs. Francis Arnold-Morris together with his wife passed away some years ago. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Austin Case of Milford, and a number of grand and great grand children, together with many old associates and acquaintances.
Upon coming to Dickinson county he was associated with his brothers in conducting a store at Arnolds Park until he homesteaded a farm, now the northwest part of Milford. He resided on this until the early eighties when he quit the farm and purchased the West Side hotel which he operated for about ten days. He then retired moving to Spirit Lake, where he has since resided. He has always been a member of the G.A.R. post and was associated with several lodges in his earlier days which he has been compelled to give up owing to his age and physical condition in later years.
