HENRY ABEL

Henry B. Abel was born in Monongahela County, West Virginia, July 3, 1831 and died September 9, 1921 at the advanced age of ninety years, two months and six days. When a young man of twenty he came west to Allamakee County, Iowa, later moving to Dickinson County. The deceased never married. At the outbreak of the Civil war he joined the 9th regiment of the Iowa Cavalry, being a member of Company E.

He served faithfully throughout the war and was honorably discharged at its close. For the past eleven years he had spent his winters at the Soldiers Home at Hot Springs, South Dakota, while making his permanent home with his nephew Jonah Welch of Milford. He was ill but a few days being bedfast only one week. During his pioneer life he taught school and was a man of superior ability for his day. He was a member of Waller Post No. 223 G.A.R. of Milford, Iowa and also a faithful member of Evening Shade Lodge, A.F. and A.M. of Spencer. Masons from Milford and Spencer escorted the remains from the house to the cemetery. Rev. Whitehead of the M.E.Church of Milford conducted the services at the home, speaking very touchingly of Uncle Henry as he was familiarly known. Mr. and Mrs. Landis, Mrs. Edna Donaldson and E.A. Woods sang three very beautiful numbers at the house.

The Masons gave their beautiful and impressive burial service at the grave, Carl Fee of Spencer delivered the lecture. Mr. Able was laid to rest in the Okoboji Cemetery at Arnolds Park.
