Dr. Allen H. Schooley, 69, a senior research scientist in the Coean Services Division of the Naval Research Laboratory, died Aug. 3 at Fairfax Hospital. He had been hospitalized following a heart attack.
Dr. Schooley began his career with the Naval Research Laboratory in 1940. During World War II, he worked on applications of radar for sea surveillance and on other electronic systems. He became superintendent of the laboratory's electronics division and then associate director of research for electronics.
In 1966, Dr. Schooley joined the Ocean Services Division, where he worked on antisubmarine warfare projects as a senior research scientist. Although he formally retired in 1974, he continued to work at the laboratory until his death.
He held the Navy's Distinguished Civilian Service Award and a Citation for Meritorious Achievement, which he received for work he did while attached tp the Navy's antisubmarine warfare laboratory at La Spezia, Italy.
His other honors included a decoration from the government of Brazil, an honorary doctorate from Purdue University, the Marston Medal from Iowa State University and the Diamond Memorial Prize of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, of which he was a fellow.
Dr. Schooley was born in Terril, Iowa. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State and a master's from Purdue. He worked for the Radio Corporation of America in Harrison, N.J., before moving to Washington to begin his government career.
Dr. Schooley held 12 patents and was the author of more than 135 technical papers. He was a member of several professional and learned societies.
Survivors include his wife, Meriel M., of the home in Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Jean Freeman, of Phoenix, Ar., and Mary Elena Jean Schooley, of New York City; a sister, Virgilia L. Marshall, of Arlington Heights, Ill., and three grandchildren.
