HIS TRIP IS ENDED

Funeral Services Yesterday Morning Over Remains of CHARLES MOTT.

A large assemblage gathered at the residence of W. H. GRUPE, on Orchard street, Prospect Hill, Burlington, yesterday forenoon, to do honor to the late CHARLES E. MOTT. The universal esteem in which this young man was held was evidenced in the beautiful flora tokens that were lovingly arranged in profusion around the casket. It was also made manifest in the looks of deep concern on every face; and as the strains of that old familiar hymn “Rock of Ages,” broke softly on the air, there was not a dry eye in the assemblage, while sobs were audible in every direction. The first M. E. church choir have never sung more sweetly, more effectively than on this occasion. Rev. J. C. CLEMONS, of Middletown, Iowa, conducted the services in a beautiful and impressive manner. Just before noon the remains were committed to Mother Earth, in a beautiful nook in Aspen Grove cemetery; and the falling clods told of the passing off of one of the most generous and kindly hearted young man of our city.

In view of the conflicting reports brought forth by this most untimely taking off, it may not be out of place to refer to them here. We are informed by the unfortunate young man’s employers that there was no shortage whatever in this accounts. On the contrary, his monetary transactions with his house were scrupulously exact. And, in fact, in searching for reasons that impelled him to the terrible deed, his friends are hopelessly at sea. Young, vigorous, holding the confidence and esteem of all who knew him; possessed of sufficient pecuniary means, and with the brightest of financial prospects ahead, there seems no possible motive. And not only this, but for some time previous and evens on the very day himself he was in the best of spirits and free from any indication of dissipation. It is therefore the only reasonable course to conclude that his intellect had become temporarily clouded.

Among the many floral emblems were a traveling mans “grip” or satchel worked out in white chrysanthemums, white roses and pale pinks, inscribed on the one side, “My Trip is Ended” in letters of heliotrope on the other “C. E. M.” the initials of the departed. This beautiful piece was contributed by the traveling men. Some specially noticeable pieces also were a large and handsome double wreath of white chrysanthemums and pale pinks and a magnificent flora anchor.

The blow falls with crushing effect on his mother. He was an only child. His father had gone before. The sympathy of all will go out to the bereaved mother.

Red Oak, Iowa, Aug. 21 – CHARLES MOTT, travelling salesman for A. Largomatcino & Co. of Burlington, shot and killed himself at the Hotel Johnson last evening. He had been ill for some time. The remains were sent to Burlington to-night.

CHARLES MOTT, traveling salesman for Logoniarcino & Co. of Burlington, was well known in Leon, committed suicide at Hotel Johnson in Red Oak last week. Mr. MOTT was a bright young business man, but like many people of genial nature was too firmly rooted to the drink habit.

[Charles was the only child of Joseph C. and Narcissa J. (Grupe) Mott of Burlington, Iowa.]
