---------TOBIAS HERMANN
-------RESIDENT MANY YEARS, DIED
Tobias Hermann, 70, passed away at 6 o'clock last night at his home, 209 South Eight street. Death came as a result of a long illness. Mr. Hermann was born in Germany, July 1, 1861. He came to this country with his parents when only three years old and has been a resident of Burlinton for the past 51 years. He was well known to a large circle of friends here. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Loyal Order of the Moose, excelsior lodge, I.O.O.F.
Forty-four years ago Mr. Hermann was united in marriage with Miss Anna Schlipp at Muscatine. The widow, two children, Tobias A. Hermann, of Burlington, and Mrs. R. W. Harding, of West Baldwin, Maine Survive as do three grandchildren.
"Toby" as Mr. Hermann, was affectionately known by his many friends, was one of the best marble cutters in the country. He not only was an expert carver, but an artist and designer as well and was known as such in many parts of the country. First as a hand worker, and later with the more inproved tools of his craft he excelled and his superior ability was recognized in every shop in which he ever worked. In his younger days he traveled much and many monuments of his skill can be found in memorial carving and building architecture the country over. One of the most notable examples of this will be found in the marble work of the federal post office at New Orleans, designed and executed by Toby Hermann.
The remains were taken to Prugh's chapel pending funeral services which will be held at the chapel at 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon. The services at Prugh's chapel and at the grave in Aspen Grove cemetery will be in charge of officers of the Elks lodge.
