FRED HERMANN IS DEAD

CITY ASSESSOR SUCCUMBS TO HEART TROUBLE YESTERDAY

Was a Good Citizen, a Popular Man and Had Given Many Years of Good Service.

Mr. Fred J. Hermann, the city assessor, who had been ill for a short time, passed away a 1:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home, No. 1108 South Thirteenth Street, death being due to heart failure.
Mr. Hermann was born in Germany in May of 1850, and came to Burlington from the fatherland when eighteen years of age, and this city remained his home. During many years he conducted a grocery on South hill, and twelve years ago he was elected city assessor. By the gift of the people he held this office for ten years, and then he was appointed by the council under the commission plan. He was a good citizen and popular man. His work for the public was performed in a careful and painstaking manner, and the assessment for the current year was approaching completion, when death overtook him, and his books and papers are in such good condition that someone who is even slightly familiar with the work will be able to take up the work where he dropped off and to complete it in a satisfactory manner.
During many years, Mr. Hermann had been giving many Burlingtonians equally faithful services as secretary of the German Protestant Fire Insurance Co. He was a member of the Turners, the Singers and the Elks, and other organizations and where he was known, the quiet, pleasant gentleman was held in high esteem.
He is survived by the widow and five children: Charles and Fred Hermann of Waterloo, Herbert, Edward and Flora of this city.
The arrangements for the funeral will be announced later, and it is to be taken for granted that very many young and old friends will pay the last honors to the good man who had so long been and honored resident of Burlington.
