Dorothy Luella Gerdner, 93, of West Burlington, died 7:57 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born on January 12, 1922 in Middletown, she was the daughter of Herman and Geneva Fern (Keller) Prehm. She married Melvin E. Gerdner on July 28, 1946. He passed away in 1999.
She was a 1939 graduate of Danville High School and attended Burlington Business College.
As a young lady, Dorothy drove a team of horses for her father. She worked at the Des Moines County Courthouse and Burlington Bank & Trust before her marriage and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Oakville United Methodist Church. She was past treasurer for the national United Methodist Women and she was very involved in the local chapter. She worked with the youth group and taught Sunday school and was very active with her church. She was a fantastic cook, a fantastic mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was an avid vegetable gardener and loved to travel.
She is survived by two daughters; Delores "Dee" Wallace of Tipton, IA and Elsie (Scott) Stephens of Burlington; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two sisters, Lura Anderson and Lucille (Milo) McCabe both of New London; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son Ronald Gerdner, son -in-law Larry Wallace and one sister Mary Smith.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gerdner will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 23rd at the Oakville United Methodist Church in Oakville. The Rev. Sue-Ellen Sherman will officiate. Interment will be held in Edwards Cemetery, rural Oakville. The family will receive friends during a time of fellowship from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services on Monday at the Oakville United Methodist Church.
A memorial has been established for the Great River Hospice House.
