Dorothy Louise Horst, 79, of Burlington, died at 4:43 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Born April 13, 1926, in Des Moines, she was the daughter of J. Ocran and Goldie Beatrice Fowler Hawkins. On Jan. 14, 1947, she married William R. Horst in Ames.
Mrs. Horst owned and operated Robert's Pottery in Middletown and Horst Tax Service until her retirement. She then did tax consultant work.
She was a 1943 graduate of Ottumwa High School and a 1947 graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a minor in chemistry. She was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Shining Trail Council of Girl Scouts, Friends of the Library, Soroptomists, Iowa Wildlife Federation, Women of Interest, Blue Moon Investments and Hope Haven. She was on the YM/YWCA board.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy A. Crowell of Davenport and Janet L. Baird of Sperry; one son, William D. Horst of West Burlington; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and her caregiver, Ruth Mertens of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Horst will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.
Memorials have been established for Hope Haven and Friends of the Library.
