Ms. Maxine Rose Lanning, 96, of Burlington died at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Great River Medical Center - Klein Center.
Born January 25, 1918 in Hancock County, Illinois, she was the daughter of Vernon Otis and Mattie Yular (Hickman) Anderson.
Maxine grew up in Burlington, graduated from Burlington High School and attended Columbia College. She was a former employee of the Burlington Hawk Eye Gazette. After her divorce she moved to Des Moines where she was secretary to the publisher of the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Later she was a pioneer in television, being on staff at KWWL in Waterloo, Peoria and KDPS in Des Moines. From there she worked with medical television in televising surgical procedures. She was a member of the original staff of Iowa's PBS station. In 1967 she returned to Burlington and served as manager of the Spider Web Youth Center for 27 years.
Maxine was a member of Parkside First Baptist Church in Burlington. The Des Moines County Historical Society awarded her a lifetime membership for her work as guide at the Phelps House Museum and she had also been a member of the Steering committee of the Burlington-West Burlington Chamber of Commerce. Maxine was a volunteer at the Burlington Public Library and a member of Retired Teachers and School Personnel. She served as treasurer of Electa Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons for over 20 years
Maxine was a world traveler, having visited all 50 states and countries of three quarters of the way around the world. In later years she was a caregiver for a friend who needed almost constant care. Perhaps one of the outstanding characteristics of her life was she tried to live by two principles, "The greatest thing in the world is love" and "Joy means Jesus first, others second and yourself last."
Survivors include her close friends and caregivers, Kathy Fischer and Mark Whalen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and one niece.
The funeral service for Ms. Lanning will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 13th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Illinois.
A memorial has been established for Klein Center's Activity Fund.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the funeral service.
