Born June 10, 1944 in Burlington, he was the son of Norman A. and Mary M. Hertel Steingreaber. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Beth) Trentz on June 12, 1965, in Dubuque, IA.

Mark graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1962. He began working at The Hawk Eye in June of 1962 as an apprentice in the pressroom. In his retirement years, he took pleasure in helping a farmer in Mediapolis. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a member of their Board of Trustees. He was once a member of the Square N Aders Square Dance Club.

His family and their activities were his world. He also loved his circle of friends with whom he and Beth traveled the United States. He cherished occasions such as birthdays and holidays that would bring the entire family and/or his friends together. Mark and Beth spent many summers, and more recently winters, in their 5th wheel RV. He enjoyed attending NASCAR races and followed Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon as his favorite drivers. He was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He could be found golfing and trap shooting many weekends with his family. He was known for always washing his cars and never driving a dirty one.
