Wendell Rutherford, 58, of 416 Barrett St., died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 1996, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Born Jan. 27, 1938, in New London, he was the son of Lorraine and Margaret McKasson Rutherford. He married Peggy Schull June 6, 1959, in Burlington.
Mr. Rutherford had worked at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant for 20 years and was the custodian at Horace Mann School. He was a member of the Danville Lodge No. 40 A.F. & A.M., KAABA Shrine, Operating Engineer Local 150, National Guard, AFSCME Local 3490, Asbury United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men.
Survivors include one son, John Rutherford of Burlington; three daughters, Kate Sullivan of Springfield, Ill., and Wendy Howe and Robin Hensen, both of Burlington; six sisters, Anita Bonar of Fairfield, Buriette Tolander of Fayetteville, Ark., Theda Grinnell and Carol Taulker, both of Las Vegas, Zelda Jackson of Fillmore, Utah, and Marcia Mooreland of Lincoln, Neb.; two brothers, Kenneth Rutherford of Canton, Mo., and David Rutherford of West Des Moines; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
A masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday followed by the family receiving friends until 830 p.m. at Sheagren Funeral Home.
The funeral for Mr. Rutherford will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Nicols-Dungan officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church.
